MDAS Rule

× and ÷ first (left → right), then + and − (left → right)

When × and ÷ appear together, solve left to right. Same rule applies to + and −.

Concept Explanation

When a math problem has more than one operation (like + − × ÷), you cannot just solve from left to right. You must follow a specific order called MDAS.

Step 1 — Multiplication and Division: Always do these first, working from left to right across the expression. If both appear, handle whichever comes first as you read left to right.

Step 2 — Addition and Subtraction: After all multiplication and division are done, handle addition and subtraction, again working from left to right.

A helpful way to remember: "My Dear Aunt Sally" — Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. Always check your work by re-reading the original problem after you finish.

Worked Examples

1

Write the expression

3 × 4 + 2

2

Multiply first (M before A)

3 × 4 = 12 → 12 + 2

3

Now add

12 + 2 = 14

Answer: 14

Key Terms

Multiplication (×)

Repeated addition. Example: 3 × 4 means 4 added 3 times = 12.

Division (÷)

Splitting into equal groups. Example: 12 ÷ 4 = 3 groups of 3.

Addition (+)

Combining two or more numbers to get a total.

Subtraction (−)

Finding the difference between two numbers.

Expression

A math phrase with numbers and operations but no equals sign.
